When we think of the best universities in the world, many renowned universities in countries such as the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, etc., come to mind. It is widely believed that studying abroad can provide students with an unmatched opportunity to gain a global perspective on education. It also gives the student an opportunity to explore a new country, meet new people, explore different cultures, and gain an outbound experience.
The opportunity to receive an education from one of the world’s leading universities, where the education system is more adaptable to recent changes in demand and technology globally, draws Indian students to pursue further education abroad. I have noted that the education system abroad is more flexible for interdisciplinary studies and provides tailored course options which open new career prospects and paves path for success.
One of the main reasons students opt to study abroad is the high quality of education. Foreign universities emphasise practical learning above theoretical learning for students to develop practical knowledge and skill-based learning. Many students in India wish to pursue a career in sports or music but are unable to do so due to a variety of problems, such as a lack of sufficient infrastructure, resources, and training resources. Foreign curricula are often designed to offer a wide range of courses, including those in the arts and sports, with adequate infrastructural support and without compromising academics.
In addition to world-class academics, universities also provide a good student experience in terms of housing and healthcare. However, the cost of living is surely high but can be minimised by scholarships or financial aid. Most foreign universities provide substantial scholarships or aid to make education more affordable and accessible, which attracts students from around India. These are highly competitive, but not impossible. Institutions have also introduced sports scholarships, which can help students in various ways and promote their interests.
Another major reason why students prefer studying abroad is the employment opportunity. While education abroad can be a gateway to migration, Indian companies also give preference to students with international qualifications. Students with foreign qualifications are equipped with a more diverse and applied skill set and this help them progress faster in their careers.
Many private Indian universities are now offering similar academic experience as foreign universities, but these can also be expensive and hence students opt for foreign universities to gain a more holistic experience and immigration opportunities. I hope more Indian universities come up to be at par with foreign universities and education is made more affordable so that students can choose based on their personal aspirations.
